Metrocard: Frequently Asked Questions
Traveling in more than one zone
If you are planning on traveling in more than one zone, please tell the driver before using the card on the first trip of the day. This will ensure you receive the maximum discount available.
What does it cost?
Metrocard gives you at least 25% off the cost of cash fares for a single trip, and even better discounts the more you use it. With Metrocard one adult trip on Metro costs just $2.10 compared to $2.80 if you pay cash.
Going to the airport
You can travel to the airport on your Metrocard and only pay $2.10 adult fare and $1.05 child fare instead of the normal cash fares of $7.00 for adults and $4.00 for a child. More information is available in the Zone 2 -3 Fare Guide.
More than one person on one card
You can take other people on your card but you will be charged a full cash fare ($2.80 Adult, $1.40 Child fare), so it is cheaper for each person to have a card. This cash fare will provide only one free transfer within 2 hours.
What do the beeps mean?
One – You’re traveling for free!
Two – Normal fare deducted.
Three – You have under $4 on your card and you may like to top up at this point.
Loading cash onto your card
Cards can be topped up in multiples of $10 as you board the bus (cash only) or at Metroinfo at the city Bus Exchange (cash or EFTPOS).
Receipt
When you load money onto your card please ensure you receive a receipt and the amount loaded is correct. This means your money has been loaded onto your card. (Keep a record of your Metrocard number in case you lose it!)
Care of your Metrocard
Your Metrocard has to be looked after like any other electronic card. You can obtain a Metrocard holder for $2.00 and a lanyard for $4.00 which will protect your card.
Lost or damaged Metrocards ($10.00 replacement fee)

If you lose or damage your card please phone Metroinfo on 3 66 88 55 or come
into the city Bus Exchange as soon as possible. We will deactivate your card
so no one else is able to use your remaining balance. When you replace
your card we will transfer your remaining balance onto your new card.
